Brazil
12.30.2023 - 12.30.2023
Brazil's coastline is the longest in South America - stretching 4,578 miles! No wonder we're at Sea for two days to reach our next port of Rio de Janerio. Here's our route along the outskirts of Brazil.
When you compare Brazil's coastline to other countries in South America, it is significantly longer. Here are the top five:
- Brazil: 4,578 Miles
- Chile: 4.015 Miles
- Argentina: 3,047 Miles
- Colombia: 2,011 Miles
- Venezuela: 1,741 Miles
Brazil's coastline is not only the longest in South America, but also one of the most diverse, with considerable number of islands, reefs, and bays.
The size of Brazil itself is also quite impressive. If it were to be superimposed on the United States, here is how it would appear:
Containing not only breathtaking beaches but also multiple festivals, it is easily not only the largest but also one of the most seductive countries in South America. It's a destination of vast wilderness, crashing waterfalls [which we'll visit on January 5th] and has the greatest assortment of plant and animal life on earth. Some of you may recall our visit to the Amazon in 2019 when we witnessed some of these Brazilian creatures firsthand.
Capybara: The world's largest rodent, commonly found near water
Black Caiman: A large crocodilian species
Tarantula: Shown emerging from its nest in this Video (that's our guide's camera in from of the nest to capture the action .. the spider reponds to the shaking of the twig which it believes might be a source of food): https://youtube.com/shorts/qWqCxr_rmW8?feature=share Sorry buddy it was just a twig!
Almost everyone knows the music of Brazil, especially the Bossa Nova, known for its subtle and complex rhythms, lush harmonies, and melodic singing in Portuguese. If you're too young to know or remember, here's a link to a popular "bossa nova" tune: https://youtu.be/PaRlW-jz1QQ?si=fNJp2S7w_G1popNg
And here are a few additional facts that might be of interest or might even help you to win that trivia contest to fatten your wallet ...
1. Brazil gets more than 80% of its energy from renewables - most comes from hydroelectricity, with biomass and wind growing rapidly
2. Brazil's highest mountain, Pico da Neblina (2994 meters) was not discovered until the 1950s.
