When weather holds you back

Port Stanley, Falkland Islands

View Around the World! - Part 1 on Where2FromHere's travel map.

A great time was had by all at last night's penguin party. We all wore black, white and something yellow. Many of our fellow travelers had some pretty exotic costumes. We merely made the most of Jeff's yellow work gloves to complete our ensemble.

The Falkland Islands, a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic, have been the subject of a long-standing sovereignty dispute with Argentina. In 1982, a war broke out due to Argentina's invasion and occupation of the Falkland Islands and South Georgia, which led to a British military response. The United States provided critical support to the United Kingdom, including fuel, intelligence, and ammunition, which contributed to Britain's victory. The conflict ended with an Argentine surrender after a loss of 900 lives. We attempted to visit this port twice, but both times the weather prevented us from doing so. The winds were strong, reaching almost 40 knots, and we would have had to take small tender boats into Port Stanley. Our captain made the decision to cancel the port visit for safety reasons. Here's a map of the islands from WorldAtlas.com.

As tired as we are of sea days, it was likely a wise decision since the port is very unprotected on the east side of the Islands and the forecast was for 43 degrees, rain and high winds. Not exactly ideal for spending the day viewing penguins (which we saw plenty of last night!)

With this itinerary change, we will now have another day at sea on January 16th as we make our way around Capte Horn, Chile to Ushuaia, Argentina which is the southern most city in the world.

sad to hear you couldn't go on land, but nevertheless a wise decision!
