Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang, the location of today's visit, had a significant strategic role during the Vietnam War. Originally a relatively quiet seaside town before 1965, Nha Trang's coastal location and deep water port made it an ideal spot for establishing a major military base and logistical support area for both South Vietnamese and American forces. Its strategic importance grew as the war escalated, transforming the once tranquil town into a crucial coastal city and military hub.
In 1965, the U.S. began constructing a massive military base and airfield just north of Nha Trang city. At its peak in 1969, the Nha Trang Air Base had over 40,000 U.S. troops stationed there. It served as a major transportation hub, hospital center, rest & recreation site, and strategic air operation base. The large American presence transformed the once sleepy fishing town. Bars, restaurants and entertainment districts sprouted up around the bases to cater to the troops on leave. The local economy boomed from the huge military population and spending.
However, Nha Trang was also a target for Viet Cong forces during the war. It experienced numerous rocket, mortar and sabotage attacks throughout the conflict as the VC tried to disrupt the American operations there. Bitter fighting occurred in the countryside just outside the city. After the fall of Saigon in 1975, Nha Trang's military importance diminished. Most U.S. personnel had withdrawn by 1972. The town entered an economically depressed period until the return of tourism and development in the 1990s.
We could hardly believe our eyes when we entered a luxury beachside oasis. To get there we took the tender from our ship to the port, where we took a short (minute and a half) bus ride to a gorgeous reception area.
Our journey continued with an exhilarating high-speed boat ride to Hon Tre Island, where we arrived at the luxurious five-star VinPearl resort, a place so meticulously designed that even the ceiling was a masterpiece of art.
After a brief shuttle ride, we found ourselves at the resort's breathtaking beach, lined with wide stretches of white sand, shaded by swaying palm trees, and featuring two pristine swimming pools. Despite the scorching 98-degree heat and stifling 87% humidity, we managed to enjoy a relaxing afternoon by the pool area, thanks to the gentle breeze and cool, inviting ocean waters.
Additionally, we were treated to an incredible buffet featuring an array of authentic Vietnamese dishes, an absolute culinary delight. I skipped the fried snakehead and the dessert table but enjoyed some delicious cusine while thoroughly appreciating the air-conditioned restaurant!
After enjoying the serene beachfront and refreshing aquatic experiences on Hon Tre Island, we reluctantly departed this paradise-like oasis to begin our journey back to the ship.
Nha Trang had transformed itself from the war-torn image often associated with Vietnam into a waterfront wonderland, a delightful surprise that by far exceeded our expectations!
