Our flight from Johannesburg, South Africa to the island of Mauritius was delayed several hours. By the time we boarded the flight it had already been a long day, but we enjoyed the opportunity to watch the Disney movie "The Lion King." It was really fun to see Zazu, the hornbill (aka "the flying banana") in the film after watching the bird in the wild. Our arrival into Mauritius was well into the evening and we had an hour drive to our evening's accomodation. By the time we checked in and went to bed, it was early morning and we feel asleep the minute our heads hit the pillow.
Nestled in the Indian Ocean, the Island of Mauritius is a tropical paradise that beckons travelers with its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and vibrant culture. This small island nation boasts some of the world's most stunning coastlines, with crystal-clear turquoise waters and soft white sands. If we had been more ambitious, we would have explored the island or gone snorkeling. However, since we were still recuperating from the week on the safari, we decided to take it easy for the day. Our resort was stunning, and we relaxed enjoying the breeze from the ocean while sipping on cocktails and conversing with friends. We even managed to see a few horse riders on the beach enjoying a morning ride.
We enjoyed a fantastic dinner at an oceanside restaurant, which included foie gras served with gingerbread, and lamb complemented by a delectable sauce. By the time we retired for the evening, I believe we felt a little like the lions in their food coma on the African Savannah.
Mauritius also offers a rich cultural tapestry, influenced by its African, European, and Asian heritage. The capital city, Port Louis, is a bustling hub where visitors can immerse themselves in local life, visit historic sites. Perhaps another day we'll return to this island to make the most of what it has to offer, but in the meantime, we're really happy to return to our home away from home, unpack and send clothes to the laundry, and look ahead to tomorrow's adventure.
