Where the Po Joins the Adriatic

Ravenna, Itaty

The delta located near Ravenna, Italy is formed by the Po River as it flows into the Adriatic Sea. The Po extends along the 45th parallel north before ending at a delta projecting into the Adriatic Sea near Venice. While we opted to stay out of the heat and onboard the Serenade of the Seas today, we gazed out over this geographical feature.

The Po Delta is a complex system of wetlands, lagoons, and forests, creating a diverse habitat for numerous plant and animal species. It is one of the largest wetland areas in Europe. It's a crucial stopover for migratory birds and is home to a wide variety of bird species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers from around the world. And, the Po Delta attracts visitors who enjoy outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, and boating. Just look at the number of sailboats in the harbor - makes one wonder how they manage to leave the dock!

We witnessed first-hand cyclists on the pier, boats traveling the canal next to our ship as well as locals and tourists enjoying the nearby beach. The Ravenna area also attracts recreational anglers who enjoy fishing in the Adriatic Sea, lagoons, and Po river. We learned the houses along the river are passed down through generations, as they can only be inherited by family members and cannot be sold to people outside of the family.
