Habsburg History Meets Italian Charm

Trieste, Italy

View Around the World! - Part 3 on Where2FromHere's travel map.

Trieste is a unique and captivating city in northeastern Italy, situated on the Adriatic coast near the border with Slovenia. It offers a fascinating blend of Italian, Austrian, and Slavic influences due to its complex history as a major port of the Habsburg Empire. The Habsburg Empire was one of the most influential and long-lasting dynasties in European history, ruling over various territories from the 13th to the early 20th century. At its peak, the empire encompassed a vast array of lands, including Austria, Hungary, Bohemia, parts of Italy, the Netherlands, and Spain, with the Habsburg rulers serving as Holy Roman Emperors for nearly three centuries until the empire's dissolution in 1806.

Trieste is renowned for its breathtaking architecture, with the grand Piazza Unità d'Italia as its crown jewel. This vast public square, Italy's largest sea-facing piazza, serves as the centerpiece of the city's architectural splendor and historical importance. Its prime location offers an unobstructed view of the Gulf of Trieste, creating a picturesque panorama that captivates visitors. The piazza's grandeur, coupled with its maritime backdrop, perfectly encapsulates Trieste's unique charm and rich heritage.

The piazza is surrounded by elegant Habsburg-era buildings, reflecting Trieste's rich history under the Habsburg Empire. Among these, the Palazzo del Municipio, Trieste's 19th-century city hall, stands out as one of the city's grandest palazzi. These beautiful historical buildings contribute to the square's unique and special atmosphere.

Formerly known as Piazza Grande under Habsburg rule, the square was renamed Piazza Unità d'Italia after November 4, 1918, to celebrate Trieste's annexation to the Kingdom of Italy.

The Piazza Unità d'Italia stands as both a visual marvel and the heart of Trieste's social landscape. One can savor a drink, engage in conversation, or simply gaze at ships dotting the horizon. Trieste's renowned café culture boasts historic establishments that have welcomed thinkers and authors, such as James Joyce (author of "Ulysses") for hundreds of years. Our walk took us past charming book vendors, stalls offering pastries and cheeses, and an impressive array of Italian leather sandals. [While not quite matching Itzins in Wisconsin, where our granddaughter Beka works, it's certainly a close second!]

The Plaza's expansive dimensions, historical significance, and the elegant buildings surrounding it make it the most important square in the city. However, our visit here was short-lived due to the high heat and humidity, and the fact that the cool, clear waters of the pool were calling me. I had to time it so I could take the plunge before the majority of the passengers returned from their excursions :) Nothing like a refreshing swim on a hot, summer solstice day! Happy June 21st!
