Visby is a picturesque town located on Gotland, Sweden's largest island in the Baltic Sea as shown here:
Great start to our day here in Visby - we sat with friends under the shade of a tree with a nice breeze enjoying the local safron cake served with whipped cream and jam.
Afterwards, we boarded the vintage 1878 train where we took a trip through the lush field landscapes of Gotland.
The island of Gotland is home to around 92 medieval churches, most of which are still in use as Lutheran churches today. Many of these churches were built during the 12th and 13th centuries in a distinct Romanesque style, often incorporating Gothic elements. They are known for their sturdy stone construction and unique architectural features. Our tour stopped to view a medieval church that's one of the largest countryside churches on Gotland.
Known for its architecture, the well-preserved medieval town is encircled by a over 2 mile-long 13th-century stone wall, featuring 27 imposing towers. Visby's cobblestone streets are lined with red rose-covered cottages, Gothic churches, and that were alive with tourists exploring its vibrant cafes, unique shops, and locals dressed in period costume. Visby also serves as a gateway to ancient Viking sites and rural landscapes.
Gotland offered a unique and unforgettable Swedish island experience with its medieval charm, rich history, stunning natural beauty, and vibrant cultural scene.
