A "Land" Sea Day

Kiel, Germany

View Around the World! - Part 4 on Where2FromHere's travel map.

Nestled at the end of a long, protective fjord lies Kiel, Germany—a renowned haven for ships and, as it turned out, for us as well. With inclement weather on the horizon, we experienced what Jeff humorously calls a "Land Sea Day."

Typically, Sea Days are when our ship remains at sea, allowing us to enjoy onboard activities. In contrast, a "Land Day" involves exploring ports, either through ship-organized excursions or independently with friends, perhaps using hop-on-hop-off buses or simply strolling through town. Our day in Kiel blended these concepts, offering a relaxing experience split between land and ship.

However, the weather posed a challenge. As we disembarked for a walk, a light sprinkle quickly escalated to rain. With forecasts predicting wind gusts up to 70 mph, we made the prudent decision to retreat to the ship, transforming our Kiel visit into an unexpected Sea Day. This compromise meant our port day morphed into what we fondly call a "Land Sea Day" and allowed us to experience a taste of the port but quickly return to the comfort of our floating home.

As August continues, we find ourselves marveling at the swift passage of time—tomorrow marks just 30 days remaining in our extraordinary world journey. Our course is set northward to Copenhagen, Denmark, a familiar port we've visited before. Despite our familiarity with the city of "The Little Mermaid," we're eager to explore it anew, hoping for cooperative weather to enhance our experience.

Our itinerary will soon take us beyond the Baltic into the North Sea, with the coming week primarily dedicated to exploring the fjords and coastal towns of Norway. Our journey will then lead us to the charming canals of Amsterdam, Netherlands. As always, we're filled with anticipation for the adventures that await us. We hope you'll continue to "sail along" with us, sharing in the excitement of our ongoing voyage!
