Cartagena - a "2 for"

"2 for" means first and last!

Cartagena really looked like a beautiful spot upon arrival. All the buildings were unexpectedly tall and white and stood out against the perfect backdrop of a blue sea. It looked a little like LegoLand made with all white blocks.

We were greeted by the ladies that were in their native costume. For me, it was memories of the past. When I was a little girl my grandparents gave me a doll with the basket of fruit on top of her head. Not sure if it was from Columbia but it sure reminded me of it when I saw these ladies dance with the tourists. Afterwards, we walked to the Old Town of Cartagena, past a fortress and an old church.

The problem was all the street vendors who would not let up no matter how many times you said no. The worst part was that our guide left us off near a park to "browse" for an hour and all that happened was a swarm of locals trying to sell sunglasses, wallets, shirts, belts, ... you name it!. We finally "escaped" into a local Starbucks!
(I think the guide got a cut of the action). Never again. She tried to convince us of how wonderful Cartagena was .. without drugs, etc. but for us it was definitely a "2 for".
