A Taste of Paradise

Barbados

View Around the World! - Part 1 on Where2FromHere's travel map.

Barbados, a pork-chop shaped island, has a deep interior traversed by narrow, winding roads that pass through isolated hamlets, old plantations and tiny villages. We docked in Bridgeport, the island's capital and home to dockside cafes, shops and markets.

Barbadian cuisine, known for its unique and flavorful dishes, is influenced by a blending of African, Indian, and British cultures. Its traditional dishes include flying fish and cou cou, pudding and souse, and Bajan fish cakes. To gain a more intimate knowledge of the food of the island we attended a Bajan cooking class. Here you see, Jeff is either prepped for Surgery, the kitchen .. or perhaps some sort of wild west escape.

Our first task was to make our rum beverage with dash of nutmeg. A little too sweet for our tastes but it helped set the mood.

We also prepped the Breadfruit for cou cou - tastes somewhat like a very gluey potato ... we both agreed it needed more butter, salt, etc.

Our main course was lamb which was a little surprising since everyone touts the Flying Fish (cod) as a local specialty.

Thank heavens Jeff got to utilize his mechanical skills to help our chefs start up the Robo Coupe and of course, when the mamouth mixer was enlisted to blend our spicy dessert cake, he was in the right place at the right time!!
